There is no one person in the world whose life is 100% filled with “goodness” or “sadness”. Yet there are people we know whose life seemed to be this way. Why does it seem this way? It is all the stories that the people tell about their lives. If only the people realize that they are the one constructing the narrative and that this construction has not come from anything that has occurred in their lives. It is just how they have chosen to story their lives, whether consciously or unconsciously. I personally think that the day a person whose life narration is filled with sadness wakes up to the fact that the narration is self-created and has not actually occurred, that day will mark a new beginning for the individual.

I remember reading a story I had come across in the blog of Judith A Sedgeman; in it, she narrates her experience of having one of her clients come for counselling. This client narrated a life full of so many negatives and nothing seemed to be working. Judith asked her if there was anything in her life for which she was thankful? After an initial shock, she went on to list a few things, after a while, a few more for which she was thankful. She mentioned her job, the nice neighbourhood she lived, her ex-husband’s willingness to provide child support, a caring…
